off subject for this thread - kinda - thers a long bridge in Alaska between Anchorage and Fairbanks across Hurricane Gultch. It is the same - you can not see the bridge out the window - and it's over 300 feet to the ground.!!!

I too rode the streetcar on the last day - on Jefferson. It was the Sunset line and when i got off at The Boundry a man took my picture getting off. Said he was recording the last day. For a short while after you might see one of the repair cars on Jefferson-they used them in the demolition.

My memory is as funny. I knew none crossed the Trinity but I dont remember them going all over old Dallas like they did.
I still find it amazing some are still in use in Mexico. Shows how a little bailing wire can solve many problems.

Interurbans were larger and more like railway cars - only self propeled. I beleive the tracks you mentioned were Interurban tracks. Interurbans could and did run on tracks in the pavement, as on Jefferson in Oak Cliff, which they shared with streetcars but more often ran on their own private right of way.

MIke - what you remember were the Trolley Busses that ran in Dallas until the mid 60's. They were not converted streetcars. As hard as it may be to beleive those were sold to Mexico City and some are still being used there!

The PCC cars they have are ex-Toronto cars - singel ended. When the expansion is completed they will have a loop at one end and a turntabel at the other so those two cars can be used. The Dallas cars were doubel ended cars and thats how they were used in Boston.

It seems to me that the powers that be in Dallas are missing an oppertunity that wont be repeated. There are six ex-Dallas PCC streetcars for sale. There are from a group of a coupel of dozen sold to Bostin when Streetcar sevice stopped in Dallas. They would be a seight restored and used on the new Bishops line to Oak Cliff. The ferris wheel accident has been discussed on this phorum at length but I am unabel to find it in the archives. The doubel wheels were not owned by the fair and were not back for several years. The 1955 accident is the only one I can find in the DMN archives.

I was fearless when it came to rides but only rode the Hammer once - when I was about 18. It was not worth it - it tossed you so violently you had bruses afterward.

Dave - The Museum Pieces you saw were on the BNSF RR. The BNSF and the FWWR cross at Carrolton but do NOT interconnect. They are two seperate railroads.

I'm not ol man but west Illinois went around the hill just west of Loop 12 back then. One lane went on the north side of the hill West and the Other lane was on the South side going East. The Googel Maps aerial of that area still show the old road. So it was actually two one lane roads - both one way.

Dave - you are probably right about the name changing in 55-56. Austins had carhops into the 60's though. I believe Red Bryans, on Jefferson, did too. The Historical Aerials show a canopy east of the building in 1956. There was a drive in with carhops on Ft Worth Ave just west of the Chalk Hill cut on the South side.- Wayne

Dave - The integration of the Dallas schools was not the only reason for "white flight". The "block busting" tactics done to neighborhoods was tragic.
