I learned to swim at Lake Cliff pool in the mid-1940's. It was a huge expanse of water or seemed so to a 6 year old kid. I almost drowned there about 1947 but was plucked from doom by a teenage girl. To this day, I have an inordinate fear of not being able to breathe. But enough about me! Sometime around the early 1960's or late 50's, they filled in part of the deep end of the pool making it

We had Schepps milk delivered for many years until 1958 when we moved to Irving. It was brought to us by Eddie Clay who drove the truck for Schepps. We met Eddie when he delivered to us in the new Vernon & James Smith duplexes on Hoke Smith and Ryan Rd. When we moved from there in about 1954, he continued with us at our new address on Zang Blvd.

As I recall, one source of water for Dallas was pumping from the Trinity itself. I heard there were graffiti postings in some Fort Worth public restrooms which read, Flush your toilets, Dallas needs water! I can't swear to the truth of this.

OK, now some ancient history. I recall when the Lenox Hotel was built in the '50's. I have no idea if it is still there. Also, there was a Mexican food restaurant near the western edge of town called La Paloma. We lived at 808 Hill Street and our Eastern property line was the Grand Prairie city limits. Gasoline at the Texaco station was 16.9 cents per gallon and was pumped by an attendant wh

My recollections of record stores go back to the 1950's. Around 1955, we shopped at Coghill-Simmons Records on West Davis. They had booths in which you could play records before purchase. Bob Coghill was always glad to see us coming on our paydays!

I grew up attending the Cliff Queen theater on Jefferson, just east of the Oak Cliff Library. Paid 9 cents for all afternoon double feature, serial and cartoons. I walked to the Vogue after the 1957 tornado had collapsed on wall of the building. It was already closed by then.

I remember when Polio was called Infantile Paralysis. My aunt had it at age 12 and my grandmother used to wrap her legs in hot towels. She is 83 now and uses a walker but is still sharp mentally.

We looked at a new '63 Plymouth Valiant there. All the cars were white and stripped as posted earlier on this thread. Three on the tree, rubber floor, no radio, heater or anything else. Slant 6 engine was good. Didn't buy because mom said it was too cheap looking so we got a used '61 Buick instead.

I took my tests there as well. April 1957, as soon as I was 16. Flunked the driving first time, don't recall why, but the second try was successful. Just renewed my license for 6 more years with no restrictions! Clear the roads-old man coming through!

He did restore it but took the tube out and put a still pic of feet in with a regular lamp bulb behind it.

I seem to remember that Sears on Jefferson Blvd. had an x-ray machine in the shoe department. I used to look at my feet every time we were there. I also think there was one at Sangers downtown.

I am retired from teaching since 2006. My spinal deterioration forced me to quit as I couldn't sit long periods or walk to classes anymore. I was in an electric wheelchair but have since shed 80 pounds and can walk to and from the car with a cane. I am 70 now and still not able to sit long so my posts will be shorter. I managed to make it through 6 episodes of cancer so I guess the Lord won't

Good memory Bill!
I remember KLIF when it was in the Cliff Towers and had red and blue alternating neon signs outside the old ballroom at the top. The ballroom was used to house all the equipment when it was air conditioned I believe.

I helped pay for the DFW toll road while attending Arlington State College in the early 60's. Drove it every day for two years from Irving to Arlington. Of course ASC is now UT Arlington. Back then it was part of the A&M System and was still a junior college.

I just remembered that Colberts had a store on 183 before they became Colbert-Volks. My mom bought clothes for my sister there. Mom bought hers at Stylish Stout before they became Lane Bryant. M C wrote about rabbit hunting and I also remember hunting rabbits where the University of Dallas is located now. There was also a Country Club called the Westward Ho about where Texas Stadium is now.

It has been a long time since I posted on the DHS site. My laptop passed away and I haven't felt up to replacing it until lately. I would love to get back to reminiscing about old times in Dallas. I plan to read posts and will comment on those I might be able to add info to. Best to all those who still remember me and a big hi to those who don't!
