I was in El Fenix back in January. Looked to be in pretty good shape to me. Or at least the front of house did.
The El Chico/El Corazon building is gone. It's now a CVS. Because there's got to be that or a Walmart on every corner, apparently.
El Corazon is owned by the Cuellar family and has reopened in McKinney.
As for the rest of the destruction. The families that have been displaced fr

"It is good to see that Oak Cliff is moving forward."
Guess it depends on your definition of forward. As someone who still lives here, all I see is the destruction of the history and essence of Oak Cliff. If it was just El Fenix it would be one thing, but this is simply the next thing.

I have always considered this forum to be a place for serious discussion of Dallas History. I follow the page posted above as well as the Dallas History Guild page. Both are great for posting photos, trivia and anecdotes about Dallas' history. But Facebook itself just isn't the place to discuss serious matters. Too many people there just looking for a reason to be offended.

We've got three of them. Two in use and one as a spare. The house, built in 1942, has a floor furnace that hasn't worked in decades. With the space heaters I don't have any reason to replace it.

I don't know. I've found this.
There is a building just to the left of the aquarium called the education annex.
2 and 2A towards the bottom.
It is 2a on this map
Not sure if that is the building you are referenced to.

I didn't need admin approval when I joined, just entered a code into a box. One of those bot proof codes.
However, that's been a while, so it could well require admin approval now. There had been a marked lack of spam the last few months and that could be why.

The wife and I own a house on 8th St. one block South of Davis near it's intersection with Hartsdale. The apartments between us and Davis used to have a tourist court on it. When we first bought the place in 1976 there was a building fronting Davis that had the appearance of a very small gas station. It could have been the "front office" to one of the tourist courts, but I have

I've seen one map with the name Fort Worth Pike on it. I don't have access to it now and don't remember the date.
The name seemed to have been applied to the street currently called Remond. It must have been before the pit to the west of Westmoreland was opened as it seemed to extend all the way to Cockrell Hill Rd. And included the part to the East back to the Commerce cut off.

Dave,
Ya'll might not have crossed paths then. I don't have the exact dates but he had probably left teaching by the mid '60s.
About 5'7 to 5'9. Thin, for his height, wore glasses and was probably already bald by then. Not much to go on, I know.
English teacher.
One of my mothers brothers.

Frank,
My best guess for the location of Cutia's Market is 1709 W 12 st. Dallas. The store was in front with residence in back. At some point the entrance to the store was enclosed and I assume the entire building is now a home.

I don't recall that it burned. It fell into disuse and disrepair and was bull dozed. Replaced by Westcliff Shopping Plaza.
As to when, probably less than 20 years ago, but again I don't recall exactly.
Funny thing is, there's a nice strip center there now doing very well. They just couldn't keep the mall rented.

While I don't know anything personally, I did find a couple of articles on him:
Wikipedia, take with a grain of salt.
A boigraphy. I don't know what the authors qualifications are.
Neither article seems to stress his time in Dallas except to say that he worked with Blind Lemin Jefferson as a guide around town.
It would seem to be that he was only here from ~1915 to his arrest ~1

Didn't the McKinney Avenue group acquire 2-3 PCC cars several years ago?
I recall photos of them being unloaded in the DART rail yard.
Edit to add 3 links.
Seems they have already gotten one of the Boston, Ex Dallas PCCs.

Sharon, I'd like to second Dave and Wayne's above statements. Since DHS has taken the board "in house" I've seldom had any issues reading or posting. In truth, I'm under the impression that it's pretty solid. Both in the updated sofftware and DHSs attitude toward it.
Spam, though frequent, is dealt with in a timely manner. Someone seems to be monitoring it regularly.

I saw a number of them just last night in my back yard. We didn't seem to have that many last year, so I was kind of surprised.

MC, I'll second Waynes' 1949 estimate. Mom and dad moved into the house on Glenfield, new, a few weeks after their marriage in September of '49. They had to wait for it to be finished. It is near Hampton Rd. That may be Glenfield that has been cut through to Hampton and there are no houses completed near Hampton. I don't know how long it took to put up a house then. Couple of months? Looking at

Looking at Google Street view, from the Schooldell side, it appears to be hollow. The camera is high enough to see the top.
I think it is also on the 1930 Fairchild aerials, though the resolution is not clear enough to be sure.
Being hollow, I'm wondering if it's a vent for the drainage system. That area was fairly well developed by the time the 1930 photo was taken.
What's really surprising

If you go to the Dallas Public Library site here:
Click on collections in the banner and search for "St. Paul's Sanitarium", there are some external views.
A second search for "St. Paul's Hospital" will turn up a few internal views of the original as well as some photos of the new one.
I have seen photos online of the inside of the original, operating rooms, deli

Well, you may be right.
However Google street view does show a standard looking Dallas street sign that says "Spanish Fort Ave. 3400"
I don't know if that actually makes it an official name for the street or not. I suppose a developer could have paid for it and putit up on their own.
