Dave, I am sure it was an ornamental, not a fruiting variety. The last time I saw it, it was two stories tall, filling the glass atrium in the building. Here is a link to a photo of the building, in which you can see the tree in the front left corner.

When I was growing up, in the 60's, we always had a fall carnival at school. it was a PTA fundraiser. Much like you describe, Dave, there were different events or games held in classrooms, and multiple games in the school gym. Cakewalks were a staple, along with a game where you tossed a ping pong ball and tried to land it in a goldfish bowl. If you did, you got to keep the goldfish. There was al

Anyone here remember the giant ficus tree in the old Rogers Electric building on Central Expressway? The building became Steinway Hall but the plant remained for a while. I'm just curious as to what finally happened to it.

Went to Oakland a week ago to locate some family graves and, although I found the large standing marker for the family section ( Franklin) I could not, at first, locate any of the graves for the family members buried there. After several minutes, I finally found the corner of a flat plaque protruding from the ground. After several minutes of digging with sticks and fingers, we found my great Uncl

Yep, it was a brand WAY back in the day. I was researching the building for a friend and suspected it was probably built as a gas station, due to its diagonal position on a corner. I found a Sanborn Travel Map from 1922 that shows the building and identifies it as a Gasol station. Hoping there might be a photo lurking somewhere that shows the building around that time. While I doubt anyone ever s

Does anyone have any photos of one of these stations? They were in Dallas in the '20's. I am specifically interested in the one that was located at the corner of Davis and Tyler in Oak Cliff. The building is currently Abruzzo's Italian Restaurant.

I've seen that building too but could never convince my husband to stop and let me snoop about a bit. Sorry to hear it is now gone.

Does anyone know for whom this street was named? It is located in the old Lisbon community. I have recently learned I have family by that namewho are buried in the old Lisbon Cemetery. Although I was already familiar with the street, it had not previously occurred to me that it might actually be connected to a family member.

I attended Greiner 1970-1973, in the original building, and when the old 7-11 was still in its original location. Two of my three children attended Greiner as well. I don't know of any middle school that doesn't have a rough group of kids among its attendees. Middle school is just the age where kids brains often turn to tapioca for a few years due to all the hormonal changes. All of the schools I

Someone probably stole it and sold it as yard art. That sort of thing has become big business in the last few years much to the detriment of our old cemeteries.

Apparently he spent a lot of time working out his tactics in his backyard in Mesquite. Such a sad, lost young man.

I remember hearing about the Chili-Rice parlor but never got to try it. I also saw Jimmy on several occasions ice skating at Plaza of the Americas. Didn't realize who he was at the time.I've always heard he was fascinating character.

Wow, I hadn't thought about Panther Hall in years. Whatever happened to it? Is it still there or long gone? My dad used to watch a C&W variety show broadcast weekly from Panther Hall on KTVT.

The DART officer, Brent Thompson, was a regular at Norma's Cafe in OC. In fact, the circulated photo of him was taken at Norma's just a couple of weeks ago, right before his wedding.

As a kid, our family vacation was to visit my daddy's family in Mississippi every summer, over the 4th of July. I never really questioned why they didn't celebrate Independence Day. My dad just told me that they did their fireworks at Christmas rather than in the summer. I'm sure there had to be a connection. These were people who still talked about the "War of Northern Aggression" as i

We used to drive through Grand Prairie on our way to Arlington every week to visit family. I remember enjoying all the neon on those clubs along the strip but only remember The Ritz and the Hi Ho Ballroom by name. Never had occasion to visit any of them though.

I hope I'm remembering this correctly. Don't remember a street name, just rode over there with my dad on several occasions. It was north off E. illinois, just a short distance west of what is now I45. It is possible I45 might have been built on top of it. My dad always just called it the city dump. so I'm guessing old municipal records for Dallas would tell you where it was. The retired Sheriff m

Really miss Baby Doe's too. My husband and I had our rehearsal dinner there in 1984. I consider it almost a miracle that the waterfall sign has survived.

Had not heard about this but that is great news if it comes to pass. Dallas has always been far too quick to tear down and mourn the loss after the fact.

I recall an old dump off of E. illinois, but I believe the property is under development now. I used to find marbles occasionally around our house, in the drip line where water runs off the roof in a rain storm, but haven't found any in a long time. I have also found a couple of tiny bottles in the drip lines as well as a horse tooth and a penny from 1936. One does find odd things in old neighbo

How many departed country clubs can you think of? The Oak Cliff Country Club didn't exactly go away but was disappointingly changed to the generic Golf Club of Dallas. However, places like Glen Lakes, Sleepy Hollow, and Riverlake(s) went away. Any others? Wasn't there a "Forest" something too ?

I do love that old neon sign. So glad they kept it and still use it. Not very many of the classic ones like that left. We had hoped that the Alamo Plaza sign would be saved but to no avail.

I seem to recall that the wood shingles were only a contributor to the Willow Creek fire. I believe I remember that official blame was placed upon the aluminum wiring, which had already been implicated in a previous fire there as well.

I remember this well. I worked for an accounting firm in downtown and one of our accountants had an apartment there. I had been fielding his calls the previous week from the management of the apartments because he was behind in his rent. That morning, I heard about the fire and could, in fact, see the smoke from my window. When he called in to check for messages (he was out of town on a audit) I

I think your proposal sounds well thought out and would be a good one. Whether or not QT actually does proper maintenance, your solution sounds like the better one for the cemetery. Good luck!

We had great luck tracking the family related to an old photo album my M-I-L purchased 30 years ago in Canton. We used Ancestry, to search the names on the photos, then left messages on an active account related to the family.

Yep. I really love it the way it is (in spite of all the dumped garbage and contractor junk) but I've known this was coming for a couple of years now so I just go out and try to document what I can before they start the project. We have picked up a whole bag of RR spikes, dated nails, and other things in the last couple of years. It will be nice when done but I love the rustic feel of it right no
