On this date (February 07) 1922, a wife lost a husband, his one son and two daughters lost a father, his father and mother lost a son, his brother lost a brother and Dallas lost a Police Officer.
Patrolman Leroy Wood, Badge Number 114, age 25 died as a result of injuries sustained the day before when he was accidentally shot by his partner Patrolman J.J. Crawford.
Patrolman Wood and Crawford were attempting to arrest a black male for a theft offense. They located the suspect at his home located at McKinney Avenue and Orange Street (now Boll Street).
The suspect exited the home with a knife in hand and lunged at Patrolman Wood. In response Patrolman Crawford fired one round at the suspect. In an accident that can only be described as
unusual, the bullet struck the suspect’s knife, the bullet then ricocheted striking Patrolman Wood in the chest.
As Patrolman Wood collapsed, Patrolman Crawford in an attempt to aid him, the suspect fled. He was later apprehended and charged with Attempt Murder. His name or disposition of this charge were not disclosed in news articles.
Patrolman Wood was transported to Parkland Hospital where he died the following day.
Patrolman Leroy Wood, a one year veteran of the Dallas Police Department is interred at Grove Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Dallas, Texas in Section 35.
