On this date (September 05) 1964, a wife lost a husband, his father and mother lost a son, his sister lost a brother, our nation lost a Marine Corp Veteran and Dallas lost a Police Officer.

Patrolman Francis (Frank) W. Bennett, age 27, was a passenger in a marked Dallas Police vehicle driven by Patrolman John D. Squier that was involved in a high speed pursuit of an evading vehicle which was northbound on North Stemmons Freeway in the area of West Northwest Highway.

As the police vehicle, utilizing red lights and siren approached a truck, also traveling north on North Stemmons Freeway suddenly changed lanes entering the left lane occupied by the police vehicle.

Patrolman Squier, in an attempt to avoid a collision turned sharply to the left at which point the police vehicle began a slight side skid. The vehicle continued contacting, then crossing the median shoulder guard railing, continued down an embankment and overturned.

The evading vehicle and the truck involved continued without stopping. A witness continued, exited at
Walnut Hill Lane and called and notified the police.

Both Patrolman Bennett and Patrolman Squier were transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital where Patrolman Bennett was pronounced dead on arrival. Patrolman Squier was transported at a later time to Methodist Hospital and admitted for treatment of injuries sustained in this accident.

Patrolman Francis (Frank) W. Bennett is interred at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Walnut Springs, Texas.
