On this date (August 14) 1992 a wife lost a husband, his three sons lost a father, his mother lost a son, his two brothers lost a brother, I lost a friend and Dallas Lost a Police Officer.

Senior Corporal (Motorcycle Assignment) Bill W. Daugherty, age 41, died at Parkland Memorial Hospital as a result of injuries sustained on August 10, 1992 while conducting speed enforcement on Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway (Interstate Highway 635) near Skillman Street.

Senior Corporal Daugherty observed a speeding vehicle, accelerated his motorcycle from the center median to begin pursuit. As the motorcycle exited the center median onto the main traffic lanes it contacted a four inch elevation difference as a result of recent main lane resurfacing.

The motorcycle began a forward vault at which time Senior Corporal Daughterty was ejected from the motorcycle. His motorcycle helmet came off as he and the motorcycle continued in what witnesses describe as cart-wheeling.

Senior Corporal Daughterty was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he died four days after the accident as a result of head and internal injuries.

Senior Corporal Bill W. (Doughboy) Daugherty is interred at the Red Oak Cemetery, Red Oak, Texas.
