On this date (August 02) 1988 a wife lost a husband, his three children lost a father, our nation lost a twenty year veteran of the United States Army with service in Vietnam and Dallas lost a Police Officer.
Officer Walter Leon Williams, age 47, died at Methodist Central Hospital after being shot in the head as he and his partner responded to a Domestic Disturbance call at the Weatherbie Square Apartments, 3707 Mount Ranier Street in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas.
As they entered the parking lot of the apartments, Joseph Howard Jr. fired into the officer’s vehicle, striking Officer Williams in the head.
Officer William’s partner requested assistance and he along with responding officers returned fire and the suspect was struck three times. He was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.
Investigation disclosed the suspect, Joseph Howard Jr. had just shot a seventeen year old female immediately prior to Officer Williams and his partners arrival.
Police Officer Walter Leon Williams is interred at the Little Flock Cemetery, Elmore City, Oklahoma.
