On this date (July 20) 1985 a wife lost a husband, his two children lost a father, Kansas City, Missouri lost a former Police Officer and Dallas lost a Police Officer.

Officer Thomas Lee Harris, age 37 died as a result of injuries sustained on July 11, 1985 at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

First, may I request any family members or fellow officers, please add any information as this occurred during a period the Dallas Morning News was not providing archived articles and the news articles I did find were vague and lacked a lot of information regarding this incident.

Officer Harris was involved in a high speed pursuit of David Jackson, age 26, a habitual criminal who had recently been released from the Texas State Prison and was evading arrest in a stolen 1984 Plymouth.

The pursuit continued south on Julius Schepps Freeway (Interstate Highway 45). After passing Simpson Stuart Road, Officer Harris began passing a vehicle. The driver of this vehicle instead of moving to the right, moved to the left causing Officer Harris to turn abruptly to avoid a collision at which time he lost control of the police vehicle which crossed the center median and northbound lanes, exiting the east side of the freeway and overturning.

The suspect, David Jackson was later apprehended, charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Evading Arrest as well as other charges related to this offense. These charges were filed as a Habitual Criminal and he was received a Life in Prison sentence upon a finding of guilt.

Officer Harris had previously served as a Kansas City, Missouri Police Officer. He is interred in a Kansas City cemetery, but I was unable to obtain information as to the specific cemetery. Help here would be appreciated.
