On this date (May 24) 1923 a wife lost a husband, two brothers lost a brother and Dallas lost a Special Officer assigned to Merchant Protection.

Special Officer John Richard Crain, age 55, was shot and killed as he investigated suspicious activity at the Browne Pharmacy, 3300 Junius Street at or near 3:30 a.m.

Officer Browne while on foot patrol noticed the lights at the pharmacy were out after observing them on earlier.

As he approached the front door a suspect fired through the door striking Officer Crain above the right eye. The suspects involved then fled taking cigars, cigarettes and $1.50 from the cash register.

Two milk delivery men heard the shot and went to the area and located Officer Crain deceased on the sidewalk at the front door of the pharmacy.

The City of Dallas Commission authorized a $500.00 reward for information on the suspects.

Somebody came forward providing the names of the two suspects involved, Ernest Lawson and Blaine Dyer and also provided information as these two suspects were also the killers of Dallas Police Officer Johnnie C. Gibson on April 19, five weeks prior to this offense in a very similar burglary being investigated by Officer Gibson at Ross Avenue and North Hall Street.

The suspects were located, arrested, indicted and convicted of the Murders of both Officer Gibson and Officer Crain. They were both executed on March 23, 1924.

Special Officer John Richard Crain is interred at the Sunny Point Cemetery, Cumby, Texas.
