On This Date (May 02) 1972 a wife lost a husband, his two daughters lost a father, a mother lost a son and Dallas lost a Police Officer.
Officer Carl Jackson (Jack) Cooke III, age 20, assigned to the Southwest Patrol Division was shot three times by a burglary suspect as he answered a Burglary In Progress Call at Scottie's Grocery, 900 South Denley Drive.
Officer Cooke was transported to Methodist Hospital where he died as a result of injuries a short time later.
From information provided by a witness, two suspects were identified, Louis Banks and George Slider were then arrested a short time later.
Suspect Banks admitted shooting Officer Cooke. Both suspects were indicted for Capital Murder and found guilty and accessed Life In Prison.
Officer Carl Jackson (Jack) Cooke III is interred at Laurel Land Cemetery adjacent to the grave of J.D. Tippit.
