Who remembers this post season football game played for several years in the 1960s, 1970s at Abeline and then Arlington? I think it appropriate here since UT Arlington participated in one of the last years that it sponsored a football team, and many Dallasites (including ones on this phorum) have connections to the school.
UT Arlington's participation was in 1967 in Abeline, I believe, which was the fall after I graduated there in June. Arlington had a top flight team, rated number two in the nation in NCAA College Division, a forerunner of what was later Division II. The game was supposed to determine the "Midwestern" College Division champion.
The game was played in a snow storm in temperatures around 10 F. Because of the conditions, many people thought North Dakota State would have a big advantage. However, Arlington handled the northerners easily, earning a 10-0 victory. Only around 1500 dedicated fans attended the game. Attendance improved when the game was moved to Arlington (and in better weather). An acquaintance who played for Arlington later told me that the team members wore long underwear and panty hose under their uniforms, in addition to heavy woolen socks. For some of those big bruisers, that would take might big panty hose.
