Purse Building 601 Elm Street

My favorite building downtown is the Purse Building at 601 Elm Street. I just love it- I don't know why. Does anybody have an fun anecdotes about the building, or know any bits of info? Also, the Record Street grill is attached to it- perhaps any info on that small diner? I want to do some research on the building pre 1970- so anything having to do with the building's early history would be great to focus on.

My first experience in 1968 with a person under the influence of L.S.D. occurred at the Record Grill.

I was walking down the sidewalk (in uniform) for a court appearance and was dragged into the building by the cashier as a twenty year old male was in the process of what I would describe as a "Trip to Hell".

After a lengthly battle, I was finally able to get him handcuffed, but I was so out of breath I just sat on top of him. A rather large cook assisted me in taking my place as I finally was able to get up.

Asked to use the phone, called the dispatch office and requested two, two man units, to transport him to jail. I later learned upon arrival at the jail, they were directed to take him to Parkland Hospital for evaluation. The examining physician requested the handcuffs to be removed (MISTAKE) and the battle began again, but at least this time their were four to get him under control again.

I am not completely useless, I can always be used as a bad example.
