Dallas County Civil War Camps

Over the years I have noted various Civil War Camps in and around Dallas County. Anyone done any research on these camps as to original location more exact than Dallas or Dallas County?

'Cordin' to this: [www.ourconfederateheros.org] Camp Bartow was seven miles south of Dallas. Not a very exact location, to be sure, but narrows the geography a bit for that one.

My first thought on reading your post was that this is a large number of permanent encampments for one area. It's likely that several of the camps you mention were temporary gathering places for area military units before they marched out. In that case, the camp may have been in use for no more than several months or less and had few (if any) buildings or improvements. (Not exactly Fort Apache, for sure.)

Most of the literature---Bullock History Center Manuscript Collection, East Texas Records (v21, 2), the TSGS journals---places Camp Likens in Smith County, near Tyler.

I can't find any Texas references to a Camp Cole, but the Missouri Camp Cole was the site of an early skirmish in July 1861. The 1863 Texas Almanac makes several mentions of the Missouri Camp Cole, but none of a Dallas-area Camp Cole.

You might want to search the Phorum message archives for info about these camps. I noticed some discussion of Camp Bartow (by a Bartow descendent) and a discussion of relic hunting at Dallas Civil War sites in the old posts.

I wonder if the "Camp Stonewall Jackson" in the query was an actual Civil War era camp or a Confederate veterans group. I know there are references to Camp Sterling Price in the DMN and Times-Herald archives as one of the local veterans organizations. The local groups seem to be named after CSA generals.
