Sawdust on the floors of BBQ joints was for the same purpose as at butcher shops, to absorb blood and other fluids from the processing and products of the place. Public health regulations stopped its use from both types of establishments. As I recall, the material on the floors was more like shavings than it was sawdust, but it was popularly called sawdust. I may remember incorrectly, since I've had a nap or two since those days.

Yes, in 1959, Beef N' Bun #1 was at 4500 Lover's Lane. The one in Walnut Hill Village was #2.

Dave McNeely's observation regarding "shavings" rather than "sawdust" is (was) correct and also that the material was called sawdust. I don't know how long the Lovers Lane location of Beef 'n Bun lasted but it must have been there ten years or more in 1959.

My uncle had a law office on the far west end of the shopping center back in probably the early 1960s. Not sure on the exact year but it was at the far west end of the center facing north.

I don't see any lawyers listed in Walnut Hill Village in 1959. Could be it was a separate building that faced a different street.

There is a David Schaffnit who worked for Hunt Oil Co. and lived on W. Stanford.

David Schaffnit on Stanford was my dad we moved up north to the Valley View - Hillcrest area in 1964. my uncle was Wayne Melton and his office was at the far west end of Wallnut Hill Village on the back side. I remember a glass door and a semi-circular planter in the front. Had to be in the late 1950s or very early 1960s. It would have been on the back side of the main building that faced NW Hwy. But on the back with parking in front.

This is my first post and I'm so happy to find this thread. Walnut Hill Village loomed large in my existance because we lived within 5 miles of Marsh and NW Hwy until I graduated from WTW in 1967 and went off to Little D for school. We moved to Durango Dr. when I was about 2. Several of my mother's sorority friends lived in the same neighborhood and we spent a lot of time at the Village. I remember there was a 7/11 facing NW Hwy that had curb service for the harried mothers who needed a gallon of milk and couldn't leave the kids in the car. The Tom Thumb was a little pricey for normal weekly shopping (that's what A&P was for) but Mother would take us there when Chief Black Hawk and his little boy were there to promote Rath Black Hawk Bacon. When we went to the A&P she would park me and my sister at the magazine stand with all the other neighborhood rug rats and we would happily look at comics until it was time to leave. I remember the 5 cent mechanical horse at Skillerns with its real leather saddle and tack. I haven't seen the toy store identified in the other posts. It was originally Toy Town and was owned by George Booth. He eventually moved to Park Forest Center at Marsh and Forest. My parents knew him, maybe from school, and I went to Walnut Hill School with his daughter. I think he knew the name of every child who came in that store. I know my brothers spent their allowances in his store for years.
Did Grant's become a Western Auto? I remember our parents buying my sister a guitar there in about 1965.
