Joel, doing a Web search, the address I found for VanValkenburgh & Vogel is 9923 Denton Drive; however, dallascad.org shows the property owner to be DART (it is along the new Green Line). So, I wonder what has become of them now. I can remember riding past their Greenville Avenue location many times during the late '60s, on trips to NorthPark.

Gigi,
P&G is an acronym for Park Lane and Greenville Ave.

Thanks Joel. I have some questions about Caruth's plantation. Is there a thread or should I start a new one? I have been off of the message board for a few years.

Reynolds Childrens Home. later eynolds presbyterian USA home then reynolds presbyterian hpme was at 7447 greenvulle ave. It later moved to Waxahachie , texas in the summer of 1960. I lived there and went to Vickery elementry in 5th and 7th grade, I live at the home now on the Presbyterian Hospital site. Vickery fed into Franklin Jr. High, which fed intoThe current hillcreast High school. I plan to go to the Vickery reunion this year.

I remember the names of some of my class mates. Bobby lewis , Billy Bob derryberry. Linda Posten , Sally Hardy, Kenneth Chenalt>, Ronnie Hayes, Ron Farley. I took swimming lessons at the Vickery Park Pool. One of my fondest memories , winning the softball throw in teh spring of 1960. Beating out Ronnie Haes, Jimming Cunningham, and Kenneth Chenalt.

More memories Math teacher Mrs, Armstrong, Health teacher Mr. Organbright, Socialstudies/English Mrs. Weekly. Music Mrs, Love I think.

A wonderful post.. Very interesting ! However, I wish someone would point out to me the
location of the VICKERY Cemetery. I see lots of obit's in the old DMNs-- saying they were
buried in the VICKERY CEMETERY.

Curtis,
I've thoroughly researched your prior references to Vickery Cemetery and have not found anything. Also, the map at the downtown DPL of all known cemeteries does not indicate a Vickery. Also we studied the areas of Vickery and Vickery Place on foot (and car) not to find any evidence, if this was the right thing to do with so much urban development. The DMN Obit archives do not reference a cemetery by this name if the search function is accurate. A study of obits on people from Vickery shows nearby interments at what is now Sparkman Hillcrest and Restland, since the 20's.

May I ask for more detail? The obit info, dates and any other reference. I'm interested, too.

The only documented cemetery nearby was relocated was the Jenkins/Thomas Chapel cemetery located on what became Glen Oaks Country Club. It is implied that this cemetery was no longer used after 1902. This could be a maybe and could have been referred to as the cemetery in question. It was tiny, however.

In other news, members, might you remember the Northpark Inn at the NE corner of Park & Central?

There are pictures of the Northpark Inn on the net, your post provides another. It looks correct, they had nice buffets.

The interesting part about the Northpark Inn was the helipad bordering Central Exwy.

The cemetery at Walnut Hill and Central was a family plot and not the Vickery Cemetery. There is a thread or two about it in the archives of the forum I believe.

I am glad you brought up the name Billy Bob Derryberry he was a real good friend of mine. I lived across from the fire station on Blackwell on the corner of Greenville. I used to catch crawdads down where the Million Dollar gentle mens club is, I hear you can catch crabs down there now. I ran around with Riley Cook, Jimmy Grandstaff, my brother Johnny Howle, Billy Bob Derryberry ( untill he got married and moved to May Pearl) Bobby Lewton, the Nelson brothers (both are still a kicking) and others I can't remember right now. I think I have sometimers.~~~Rusty~~~

Rusty,

Did you attend Vickery Elementry? My memory is a little fuzzy too. The Music teacher was Mrs. Hart not Mre. Love. I do remember Bobby. At times I will have a nostalgic attack and think of some of the people htat I went to school with at Vickery. I often wonder whar happened to Billy Bob , Fred Anderson , and Ritchie ? , I do know that the Dallas Library has various copies of teh Hillcrest High School Yearbooks from the early 1960's . I plan to review them sometime this summer . Maybe I will be able to recognize the names of other fellow Vickery Vipers.

Note
: I messed up an attempt at an earlier post and it propagated to every subject area. I am not familiar with this wen site. Is there some one monitori ng this site ? I wouild like to heaqr from some of teh people.

I am very new to this forum, and am really enjoying what I read.I grew up in Dallas and love Dallas History. I do remember going to Vickery Park as a kid to go swimming in the big pool, and later as a teen, going to Dubaks Skating Rink.I have a lot of fond memories of Dubaks Skating Rink. Also remember Northpark Inn and eating at the railhead. In the late 70s I used to frequent a few clubs in the area. One club I used to love was Lilly Langtrees Saloon, and got a kick out of it being right up the street from Judge Roy Beans, in where I dated a waitress that worked at Judge Beans. Also had friends who worked at the Filling Station Restaurant and went there frequently. I remember one night playing pool at a club called St Christophers (south of P&G)and they had hired a new band, when the guitarist started playing we stopped playing, put down our sticks to listen at how good he was. The guitarist was "Stevie Ray Von". Wow!! Also remember in the 70s on Twin Hills down from the Railhead was a VW shop called the Bug Shop, as I used to drive VWs back then. Does anybody remember in the late 70s they actually moved the famous Chicken Ranch (from LaGrange TX) to Greenville Ave. just North of Park on the East side and opened it up as a club. I went there a few times and even dated a waitress that worked there. I still have a red Teeshirt from there! Does anybody know if the house still stands?

not exactly Vickery but a bit up the road...

I forget when it burned down but I understand that Joe Campisi was one of those that placed a funerary wreath at the charred shell
Deuback's Skating Rink was across White Rock Creek

Thanks for the nice list of businesses. You could add L & L Motors, which was later turned into The Filling Station, to your list of older Vickery businesses.

My grandfather, William Homer Loveless, and my uncle, J.W. Loveless ran a Mobil service station on the east side of Greenville just south of Park Lane, called L & L Motors from about 1926 to 1973. Homer got a loan around 1930 and built a new brick addition to the business. Bricklayers made $2 per day and because of the depression only worked every other week so that more people could be employed. It was the same for electricians, carpenters, and others.

He hired a "negro orchestra" for the grand opening, put sawdust on the floor, and had a dance. It was the biggest thing to happen in the area up until that time, according to my dad.

Homer sold the gas station a few times, but he always got it back. He eventually made his son J.W. a partner. Homer died in 1960. My grandmother worked at the station with my uncle. Some time after Homer died, J.W. sold the building and leased it back. He finally had to close the business when the lease expired in 1973.

It was turned into The Filling Station restaurant. An article in the July 20, 1975 Dallas Times Herald, "A Filling Station Pumping No Gas," was about the opening of the restaurant and some of the station's history.

I first ate at The Filling Station on August 15, 1975, which I can remember because it was the day before I got married. I went to eat there a few other times over the years, but no one who worked there was ever interested in my family connection to the business. Imagine that. Ha, ha.

My grandparents lived at 6933 Twin Hills in Vickery. My dad and uncle leased the lot to the company that built the Railhead restaurant in the 1970s. Their land was part of the parking lot, which I remember disappointed me, as I thought the family home would claim a more prominent role in the project. Later, after the Railhead closed, they sold the land to a developer.

Both of my parents grew up in Vickery, and I worked many weekends, and one whole summer in 1964, at the station pumping gas. I also spent many days and nights at my grandparents' house in Vickery, so I have some firsthand knowledge of the station and the area. The rest is from family oral history.

Thanks for sharing those photos Jeb! They are really interesting, especially the one looking out from the station towards the south down Greenville Avenue. Love it!

Hey Jeb, You first ate at the Filling Station on my 25th birthday! Yay! Meanwhile, the street name there, "Twin Hills" has always made me wonder about the lay of the land there. Being too lazy (ie cheap) to get a topographical map, I wonder if you (or others) can elaborate on the two hills or humps. Do they run north/south? Thanks, Leslie

I loved the swimming pool at Vickery Park in the early sixties because they had cold beer in cups and it was great when it was really hot!
