70's Disco Club

Lived in or around Dallas all my life and am having a hard time remembering the name of a disco type nightclub of the early to mid-seventies. It was on Northwest Highway at Shady Brook, right across the street from the main entrance to the Village Apartments. I vaguely recall a ship or somthing out front - maybe it was a restaurant before it became a dance spot.

Believe it was called "The Point"

No the "Point" that you refer to was the "Point After" just off of Greenville and Lovers Lane.
The 70's places that I recall were "Elan" on Greenville S. of Lovers Ln;"Carlos & Pepi's" on NW Hwy near Bachman Lake;and "Oz" on LBJ between Preston & Inwood. Those were my "Discotheques of choice".

I'm pretty sure it was just "The Point" different than the "Point After club". Had a friend that was a waitress there and I went out with the asst. mgr. Adam. It wasn't open that long. But if someone goes to the Dallas Library downtown it can be checked from the old phone books or city directory. I'll guess around 1977 give or take a year. I know I came across a note pad from there when going through some junk a while back. I remember it was printed with red ink. I believe I was working at "Scotland Yard" at the time. (It had been "Bob Lilly's Other Place", before it became a disco) on
W. Northwest Hwy. down near Bachman Lake.

I guess that I just don't remember that place..nor Bob Lily's other place on NW Hwy.I remember that Billy Bob Harris and Craig Morton had a place in that same area called "Wellingtons"
Gosh, all of that's a blur. I got married again in 1977, sold all of my Nik-Nik shirts, and became
a bland, respectable businessman.

I was in only one disco in my life and it was a place on Greenville Ave. and the name, I think, was Ichabod's. Does that ring anyone's bell? It wasn't there long.

I remember the name. I believe that Ichabods was either in Old Town Shopping Ctr...close to Daddy's Money, or across Lovers Lane behind where the old LouAnns used to be.

Yes, "Wellington's" was just a block or two east of Bob Lilly's The Other Place, but across the street. Believe "wellingtons's" was there first. I think the "Other Place" was built around 1975. It was before the European Crossroads was built (the shopping center just to the west, that had no parking when it was built- never did any business, I wonder why? they did put in parking in the back and a few clubs opened in there Like the" #3 Lift"(another disco). "Carlos and Charlies was next door to the "Other Place". I don't believe Bob Lilly really
had any owner- ship if so very little. It was his name that the owners wanted to use. They also owned "The Place Across the Street" it was at Lovers Lane and Greenville. S/.E corner but backed up to Greenville facing east. Believe it turned into "La Bare" one of those strip places where the guys strip and women went for Birthday Partys. (Never went, there was another one in the late 70's across from where "Wellinton's" had been).

I think Ichabod's was in Old Town. I was traveling a lot in the 70s and when I was home I wanted to stay at home but it sure appears from the growing list of Dallas clubs developing here that I missed a lot.
There was a place I frequented in the 80s that had live music. It was called the New York Tavern (?) and was located in a hotel across Central from North Park.

The #3 Lift was owned by another SOC grad named
Duane Thompson. He owned several other clubs around Dallas in the '70s.
Carlos & Pepi's changed ownership in '78 or '79.

Ichabods might have been where Marianos Mexican Cafe opened later.
There was a great restaurant/jazz joint named Papillion off of Central and Southwester(?).
In keeping with the "butterfly" named theme,the same owners opened Farfallos adjacent to Arthurs at NW Hwy and Central.

I remember Farfallos. I knew a waitress that worked there.
Man, Bill, you and Sue have incredible memories. There's much to be admired and envied about that.

So very long ago, I actually applied for a waitress job at the then soon to be opening Playboy Club. Anyone recall where that was? I found I couldn't do all those contortionist moves you had to learn (serving drinks, that is) so I opted out. Was later a part-timer downstairs in the mine at Baby Does.

You probably made a wise choice. Baby Does was a pretty classy place. The Playboy Club was so plastic that it's a wonder that they could get fire insurance.

Yes, he also owned the "Red Dog Saloon" across the street, before the #3 Lift. I worked at both of them.

I believe that Duane also owned a club on Greenville Ave. just So. of Walnut Hill. It was
close to where the old Vickery Park swimming pool was years ago.Do you remember the name?
Duane died several years ago, and I ran into his widow, Mary and her current husband...who is also an old friend from NTSU.

are you talking about where Goody-Goody's liq. store is? (I guess that it's still there- Have not been in that neck of the woods in years.)
I got out of the club business in 79 when I started my own business. I turned 30 and thought I should grow up. But the 70s WOW, the stories I COULD TELL!!!
I retired 7 years ago when I turned 50 and I have less time now to get things done than ever.
GIRLS do you notice how our houses became cluttered when the internet came along. (and I have a house keeper that comes every other week. She just has to clean around the clutter.)

This place was on the right as you're heading N. on Greenville past Park Lane. Greenville curves around, and there is a low spot..almost a hollow on the right.There's a shopping center down there and this club was in that center. It opened about 1976 or so.

There was a club called "Biffs". Was the walk way just made of wood?
Now there was that free standing building that was built around 79 and that club was called "Di Vinci's" that was owned by the Pratt family. That was about the same time they bought the Sands Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Both was short lived for them.
