Was White Rose Brewery an early franchise operation? There was a White Rose Brewery in Little Falls, Minnesota back in that time as well, according to numerous google hits. Also, there is currently a White Rose Ale brewed by a White Rose Brewery in England. I have drunk that, and it is good. Descended in any way from a predecessor related to the Minnesota or Texas outfits?

anyone know what brand of beer was brewed in the building that now houses the resturant called the brewery?

Grand Prize Beer was brewed in that building. A long time retired Dallas Police Officer's grandfather was the brewery manager and he told of transporting beer to the rail yards behind where the Texas School Book Depository is now located and using ice in box cars as apparently beer in that time period was not pasteurized and would spoil if not cooled.

I was reminded not long ago of the unique odors of the WEST END especially when the storage pens at Neuhoff Packing were crammed full and it was over 100 degrees in the summer. Dreaded hog days.

There was a old warehouse that was just north of the old firehouse that was on Laws Street, just north of McKinney Avenue that was full of bins of grain, mostly corn. It apparently had been stored there for years and I never saw anybody around the building. The rats loved it. The firefighters would bang loudly on the rear door of the firehouse before exiting to clear a path. I always wondered if this was a storage area for the old brewery. The building was demolished when Woodall Rodgers Freeway was constructed as was the old firehouse.

I did not know that Grand Prize was brewed in Dallas, I knew that it was brewed in Houston by Gulf Brewing Company which was owned by Howard Hughes, a company he started after prohibition was over.

The Brewery manager I spoke of was named Gustavo and apparently he Americanized his name and was known in Dallas as Gus. From what I learned listening to his grandson, there were several brands of beer brewed at the Brewery and apparently the last was Progress which moved it's operation to Oklahoma City and was later taken over by Lone Star Brewing. The brewery was across the street from the Oklahoma City Police Headquarters and the odor was always there.

I remember when I attended the Dallas Police Academy which was located just north of Love Field on Shorecrest Drive that early in the morning when the wind was from the southwest which it mostly always was the odor of the Wonder Bread/Hostess Bakery and Speas Vinegar Company on Denton Drive competing with each other. That mixed in with the jet fuel exhaust from Love Field.

I was under the impression that Progress (a3.2 beer as were all in OK until the late 60s or early 70s) started in Oklahoma as they were there when we moved from San Antonio in '49. I know that Lone Star, which began in San Antonio just after WWII, was not widely marketed in West Texas until production was begun in OKC sometime in the 60s, if I recall correctly. I remember the Lone Star/Progress connection, but thought it was Progress that bought Lone Star and that they were both ultimately bought by Schlitz and produced at a large brewery in Longview well into the 90s. My confusion may stem from studying the product with more detail than the corporate relationships smiling smiley
