Gosh, I haven't thought of Gibson's in years and years. Didn't the Gibson family live in the Dallas vicinity or am I mistaken?
Also, Spartans and then they became Spartan/Atlantic.

Mott's
Kresge's (S.S. Kresge Corp. morphed into K-Mart Corp. and was Wal-Martted out of the Metroplex. Nearest one is in Lufkin now).
McCroy's
Revco
Rexall drug stores (acquired by Page drug stores which was acquired by Eckerd's which is owned by J.C. Penney's and is about to be unloaded to RiteAid and/or CVS and/or others).
BTW, Woolworth morphed into Venator Group, Inc. after shuttering its last 5&10 circa 1996, operating as Champs Sports and Foot Locker. It's now known as Foot Locker, Inc.
Are you following this so far?

I'm not sure where the Gibson family lived but it was in the Dallas area. They had a manufacturing plant in Seagoville, and if I'm not mistaken, their first store was opened there as well.

There was one of which I recall being a grandson of the Gibson's. If I recall correctly, he died in a motorcycle accident, early 70's, in a motorcycle accident on Forest Lane.

I always wondered what happened to the Gibson's chain. I remember how hard that guy used to fight the state "blue laws" because he wanted to open his stores on Sunday. He was on TV a lot being interviewed about his quest against the blue laws. Anybody know the fate of Gibson's?
Leonard's was acquired by Dillard's, circa 1973.
Remember the Buddies supermarket chain? I read Burrell L. "Buddie" Markum's obituary in the FW Star-Telegram a couple of weeks ago. I believe that chain was acquired by Winn-Dixie, which pulled out of Texas a few years ago.
Do any of you old-timers remember the Worth Food Mart chain, which disappeared circa 1965?

A. Harris, over there in Oak Cliff.
Now some sort of DISD building? Can't remember the location but I've driven by it on the way to the VA hospital. Use to go there with my grandmother.

I remember there being a Polar Bear ice cream across from Lake Cliff Park when I was a kid, I think. Even after we moved away from Oak Cliff in the early 1960's we'd have picnics there and walk across the street for ice cream.

Unless I overlooked it.. How about Piggly Wigglys.. There used to be a Piggly Wiggly I believe at Polk and Kiest. Safeway is back in the area per-say. They bought Tom Thumb a few years back. Just look at some of the "Store Brands" next time you are in one.. There is plenty of the "S" brand to go around.. The old Gibson building is still there in Seagoville. But has'nt been a Gibsons in quite a while. It's next to the Minyard Food Store at Hall St. and 175.

Check out pigglywiggly.com. They still have stores throughout the south, and as close as Denton.

The Gibson's store you mentioned out close to 175 was the new store. The original Seagoville store was a hole-in-the-wall located on the north side of Kaufman street just west of Malloy Bridge Road. I looked at my Mapsco to see if I could figure out where the manufacturing plant was, and if I'm not mistaken, it was on Gibson street. There is a Gibson Garden Center on O'Connor in Irving and it is in what was a Gibson store building.

Levine's isn't gone; there are three stores in Dallas and one each in Irving, Mesquite and Garland. However, add these to the list:
Colbert's
The Melody Shop
Oak Cliff Music
Bearden's Furniture
Shaw's Jewelers
