On this date (September 03) 1992 a wife lost a husband, a father and mother lost a son and Dallas lost a Police Officer.
Police Officer John Paul Jones Jr., Badge Number 6085, age 25, died as a result of a massive heart attack while pursuing an armed juvenile suspect.
Police Officer Jones was assigned to a special squad assigned to the South Dallas area regarding illegal drug sales and other violent crimes connected.
The squad had entered an apartment complex located at Meadow Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, a location known for illegal drug activity. A resident notified them that a nearby suspect was armed with a pistol.
As Police Officer Jones and two other Police Officers approached the suspect, he ran from the location on Meadow Street. Police Officer Jones and the other officers began a pursuit.
After approximately one hundred yards, the suspect realizing he was going to be apprehended stopped, raised his hands and surrendered. As Police Officer Jones began to search the suspect he collapsed.
Police Officer Barbara Carey immediately began Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and an ambulance was requested.
The remaining officers continued the arrest of the 16 year old juvenile suspect who was found to be armed with a pistol and was carrying a large sum of money. He was charged with the weapons offense.
Police Officer Jones was transported to Baylor Hospital where he died shortly after arrival.
Police Officer John Paul Jones Jr. is interred at the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
