On this date (August 11) 1923 a wife lost a husband, his three sons lost a father, his father lost a son, his three brothers and two sisters lost a brother and Dallas lost a Police Officer.
Police Officer Dexter Clayton Phillips, age 29, died as a result of injuries sustained when the motorcycle he was riding entered a deep depression in the roadway at the intersection of Bowser Avenue and Travis Street, a roadway undergoing paving at the time.
The motorcycle forward vaulted, throwing Officer Phillips from the motorcycle, which then overturned on top of him and both he and the motorcycle continued skidding to final rest.
This accident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. and there was no street lights or traffic control devices at this intersection.
Officer Phillips was transported to Parkland Hospital by emergency ambulance where he died as a result of a fractured skull at 7:00 p.m. this same date.
Officer Dexter Clayton Phillips is interred at Grove Hill Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas.
